As usual, for me and many others, today is all about discovering new music and catching up with blogging friends new and old. Thanks to the lovely Jim over at A Unique Title For Me, we have a prompt each week which gives us the inspiration we need to share our favourite tracks – this week it’s Mom/Mother/Flowers. • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not.
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due.

My initial thought was to use ‘flower’ as a prompt but then two songs sprung to mind which I just had to share with you – both are a little bit weird which is probably why I love them ;O)

Mother, do you think they’ll drop the bomb?
Mother, do you think they’ll like this song?
Mother, do you think they’ll try to break my balls?
Ooh, aah, mother, should I build the wall?

Mother, should I run for president?
Mother, should I trust the government?
Mother, will they put me in the firing line?
Ooh, aah, is it just a waste of time?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna make all of your nightmares come true
Mama’s gonna put all of her fears into you
Mama’s gonna keep you right here under her wing
She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing
Mama’s gonna keep baby cozy and warm

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
Of course mama’s gonna help build the wall

Mother, do you think she’s good enough for me?
Mother, do you think she’s dangerous to me?
Mother, will she tear your little boy apart?
Ooh, aah, mother, will she break my heart?

Hush now, baby, baby, don’t you cry
Mama’s gonna check out all your girlfriends for you
Mama won’t let anyone dirty get through
Mama’s gonna wait up ’til you get in
Mama will always find out where you’ve been
Mamma’s gonna keep baby healthy and clean

Ooh, babe, ooh, babe, ooh, babe
You’ll always be a baby to me

Mother, did it need to be so high?

This song is taken from the album The Wall which was, arguably,  the most innovative  of all time. It tells the story of a man who, in trying to deal with his mental health issues, builds a wall around himself and slowly descends into madness. I remember being fascinated with this album the first time I heard it and it holds a fascination for me still.

The second track I’ve chosen is Mama by Genesis.

I can’t see you mama
But I can hardly wait
Ooh to touch and to feel you mama
Oh I just can’t keep away
In the heat and the steam of the city
Oh its got me running and I just can’t brake
So say you’ll help me mama
Cos its getting so hard

Now I can’t keep you mama
But I know you’re always there
You listen, you teach me mama
And I know inside you care
So get down, down here beside me
Oh you ain’t going nowhere
No I won’t hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Can’t you see me here mama
Mama mama mama please
Can’t you feel my heart
Can’t you feel my heart
Can’t you feel my heart oh
Now listen to me mama
Mama mama
You’re taking away my last chance
Don’t take it away
Can’t you feel my heart?

It’s hot, too hot for me mama
But I can hardly wait
My eyes they’re burning mama
And I can feel my body shake
Don’t stop, don’t stop me mama
Oh make the pain, make it go away
No I won’t hurt you mama
But its getting so hard

Now I can’t see you mama
But I know you’re always there
You taunt, you tease me mama
But I never never never can keep away
It’s the heat and the steam of the city
Oh got me running and I just can’t brake
So stay don’t leave me mama
Cos its getting so hard

I say that this song is weird simply because, to me,  it seems to be about a man with an Oedipus complex which I always thought was a strange subject . Saying that, it is an extremely powerful song and Phil Collins performance is intense, especially his devil laugh – you’ll get what I mean after you listen to it ;O)

Anyway, those are my choices for this week – I really hope that you like them and that you have a fantastic day!

For me, Sundays have become about discovering new music and new blogging friends and this week is no exception. There was a boy
A very strange, enchanted boy
They say he wandered very far, very far
Over land and sea
A little shy and sad of eye
But very wise was he
And then one day
A magic day he passed my way
And while we spoke of many things
Fools and kings
This he said to me
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return”
“The greatest thing you’ll ever learn
Is just to love and be loved in return”

This is such a simple little song but what a powerful message! I have no idea where I first heard this or even which version it was (there have been many) but I love it and I hope that you will too :O)
Have a great day!

The prompt for this week is Animals; I don’t know if my choice will qualify as Mosquitoes are insects and not animals but this is their song and I love it:

I know, I know the sun is hot
Mosquitos come suck your blood
Leave you there all alone
Just skin and bone
When you walk among the trees
Listening to the leaves
The further I go the less I know
The less I know

Where will you run?
Where will you hide?
Lullabies
To paralyze

Fat and soft, pink and weak
Foot and thigh, tongue and cheek
You know I’m told they swallow you whole
Skin and bone
Cutting boards and hanging hooks
Bloody knives, cooking books
Promising you won’t feel a thing
At all

Swallow and chew
Eat you alive
All of us food that hasn’t died
And the light says

Somehow they pick and pluck
Tenderize bone to dust
The sweetest grease, finest meat you’ll ever taste
Taste, taste
So you scream, whine, and yell
Supple sounds of dinner bells
We all will feed the worms and trees So don’t be shy

Swallow and chew
Eat you alive
All of us food that hasn’t died

Writer(s): MICHAEL MELCHIONDO, JOSH HOMME, NICK S OLIVERI

The Queens of the Stone Age are well known for their uncompromising heavy rock style and the profanity that’s often found in their lyrics but this is soft and slow and, in my opinion, quite beautiful, despite the subject matter.

The song begins slowly and languorously and you could easily imagine yourself sitting out on a sticky, humid night in the bayou. It then progresses to an instrumental section with piano, violin and soft drum beats that invite you to sway and get lost in the music. The tune is then picked up by a steel guitar and the beat becomes more insistent but never a true ‘rock’ beat. The lyrics are sung softly and, on occasion, whispered intimately; this is far from a love song but, for some reason it feels like one.

Have a super Sunday one and all

Feeling the moment the slip away
Losing direction you’re losing faith
You’re wishing for someone
Feeling it all begin to slide
Am I just like you?
All the things you do
can’t help myself
How do you feel when there’s no sun?
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again?
How do you feel when there’s no one?
Am I just like you?
Turning to face what you’ve become
Bury the ashes of someone
Broken by the strain
Trying to fill that space inside
Am I just like you?
All the things you do
can’t help myself
How do you feel when there’s no sun?
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again?
How do you feel when there’s no one?
Am I just like you?
All the things you do
Don’t ever feel
that you’re alone
I’ll never let you down
I’ll never leave you dry
Don’t fall apart
Don’t let it go
Carry the motion
Carry the motion back to me (to me)
Feeling the moment the slip away
Feeling the moment the slip away
So I’m just like you
How do you feel when there’s no sun?
And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again?
How do you feel when there’s no one?
Am I just like you?

Feeling a Moment lyrics © BMG Rights Management
This brilliant song starts with a huge, brief burst of energy and then quickly slows. The lead singer and song writer, Grant Nicholas, speaks to his audience directly in an intimate and personal way. He’s speaking to someone who seems to be giving up on life with, seemingly great empathy and understanding but then he poses the question ‘Am I just like you?’
He goes on to say that, whatever happens he will always be there and that they’ll never need to feel alone but, for me, the last words of the song and the way that they are sung have always sounded like a cry for help. I wonder then if the question
“And how will you be when rain clouds come and pull you down again?”
is almost willing the other person to feel sad and lonely so that he will not have to feel alone. What is it they say about ‘misery loves company’?
This is one of my absolute favourite Feeder tracks and I really hope that you like it. Have a wonderful Sunday :O)

It took me ages to think of a song this morning but I finally came up with one that takes me back to my angst ridden teenage years:

Armalite, street lights, nightsights
Searching the roofs for a sniper, a viper, a fighter
Death in the shadows he’ll maim you, he’ll wound you, he’ll kill you
For a long forgotten cause, on not so foreign shores
Boys baptised in wars
Morphine, chill scream, bad dream
Serving as numbers on dogtags, flakrags, sandbags
Your girl has married your best friend, loves end, poison pen
Your flesh will always creep, tossing turning sleep
The wounds that burn so deep

Your mother sits on the edge of the world
When the cameras start to roll
Panoramic viewpoint resurrect the killing fold
Your father drains another beer, he’s one of the few that cares
Crawling behind a Saracen’s hull from the safety of his living room chair
Forgotten sons, forgotten sons, forgotten sons

And so as I patrol in the valley of the shadow of the tricolour
I must fear evil, for I am but mortal and mortals can only die
Asking questions, pleading answers from the nameless faceless watchers
That stalk the carpeted corridors of Whitehall

Who orders desecration, mutilation, verbal masturbation
In the guarded bureaucratic wombs

Minister, minister care for your children, order them not into damnation
To eliminate those who would trespass against you
For whose is the kingdom, the power, the glory forever and ever, Amen
Halt who goes there, Death, approach friend

You’re just another coffin on its way down the emerald aisle
When your children’s stony glances mourn your death in a terrorist’s smile
The bomber’s arm placing fiery gifts on the supermarket shelves
Alley sings with shrapnel detonate a temporary hell
Forgotten Sons

From the dole queue to the regiment a profession in a flash
But remember Monday signings when from door to door you dash
On the news a nation mourns you unknown soldier, count the cost
For a second you’ll be famous, your medal posthumous

Forgotten sons, forgotten sons
Peace on earth and mercy mild, Mother Brown has lost her child
Just another Forgotten Son

Writer(s): JELLYMAN BRIAN, DICK DEREK WILLIAM, POINTER MICHAEL JAMES, KELLY MARK COLBERT, TREWAVAS PETER JOHN, MINNETT DIZ, ROTHERY STEVEN THOMAS
Musically this won’t be for everyone and for me, to be honest, it was always more about the lyrics with this track and the sense of anger and bitterness that came with them. The song was written to protest the violence incited and carried out by the IRA and I found it be intelligent, poignant and powerful. It’s not everyone that can come up with the lyric:
“Who orders desecration, mutilation, verbal masturbation
In the guarded bureaucratic wombs”
and the lead singer, Fish, almost spits out some words whilst others are a caress. You’ll make up your own minds and I’m fairly sure that some of you won’t listen to the end but, in my opinion, it’s a brilliantly crafted protest song.
I’d be genuinely interested to know your thoughts..

See, there’s nothing to it :O)

My song choice for this week has deviated slightly from the prompt just because I wanted the opportunity to share this stunning track with you:

When your heart’s in someone else’s hands
Monkey see and monkey do
Their wish is your command
Not to blame
Everyone’s the same
All you do is love and love is all you do
I should know by now the way I fought for you
You’re not to blame, everyone’s the same
I know you think that you’re safe
Mister
Harmless deception
That keeps love at bay
It’s the ones who resist that we most want to kiss
Wouldn’t you say?
Cowboys and angels
They all have the time for you
Why should I imagine that I’d be a find for you
Why should I imagine
That I’d have something to say
But that scar on your face
That beautiful face of yours
In your heart there’s a trace
Of someone before
When your heart’s in someone else’s plans
Things you say and things you do
That they don’t understand
You’re not to blame
Always ends the same
You can call it love but I don’t think it’s true
You should know by now
I’m not the boy for you
You’re not to blame
Always ends the same
I know you think that you’re safe
Sister
Harmless affection that keeps things this way
It’s the ones who persist for the sake of a kiss
Who will pay and pay
Cowboys and angels
They all have the time for you
Why should I imagine that I was designed for you
Why should I believe
That you would stay
But that scar on your face
That beautiful face of yours
Don’t you think that I’d know
They’ve hurt you, before
Take this man to your place
Maybe his hands can help you forget
Please be stronger than your past
The future may still give you a chance
The future, the future, not the past
That scar on your face
That beautiful face of yours
Don’t you think that I know
They hurt you before
Songwriters: George Michael
Cowboys & Angels lyrics © Warner/Chappell Music, Inc
For me, this song is reminiscent of late night jazz clubs; it’s around 2am and a few couples are clinging together, swaying around the dance floor, completely caught up in each other. George Michael’s voice is like honey: soft, sweet and rich and the music just flows with the rhythm of a heartbeat.
The lyrics tell of the hopelessness of loving someone who ‘loves’ for a living i.e. a prostitute. It could be a tawdry tale but instead it’s something really quite beautiful and almost innocent. It’s one of my favourite songs to chill out to and I really hope that you like it.
Have a super Sunday :O)

This is my choice for this week:

Trouble is her only friend and he’s back again
Makes her body older than it really is
She says it’s high time she went away
No one’s got much to say in this town
Trouble is the only way is down
Down, down
As strong as you were, tender you go
I’m watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet
I know what it means and I’ll carry you home
I’ll carry you home
If she had wings she would fly away
And another day God will give her some
Trouble is the only way is down
Down, down
As strong as you were, tender you go
I’m watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet
I know what it means and I’ll carry you home
I’ll carry you home
And they were all born pretty in New York City tonight
And someone’s little girl was taken from the world tonight
Under the Stars and Stripes
As strong as you were, tender you go
I’m watching you breathing for the last time
A song for your heart, but when it is quiet
I know what it means and I’ll carry you home
I’ll carry you home
Songwriters: James Hillier Blount / Max Martin
I am a huge fan of James Blunt’s early songs (he lost me when he moved away from ballads I’m afraid) and this is one of my favourites. I’d actually never seen the video before this morning and I was glad to see that it fits perfectly with the song; the melody is quite simple but the lyrics are unbearably poignant.
For a very long time after I lost my husband I couldn’t listen to this song without crying  but now I can appreciate it for what it is, the writings of a man trying to live with the memories of the horrors of war. With that in mind I’d like to share this song with you too, it’s also by James Blount and, for me, it should serve as a stark reminder to anyone who ever gets the idea into their head that war is a good idea:

Once there was a gardener, whose horse became a dream
It then became a nightmare, and nothing was redeemed
His heart was over shadowed, it yielded to the pain
Of lost and broken memories, of love he’d spent in vain.

There within the labyrinth, he bathed in vapors green
He poured his very essence, into pools that can’t be seen
He fell into the precipice, by choice he entered through
Dark waters yet unspoken of, a loss he could not bear to
Be true.

His fate lay among the flowers, of the desert morning
Stars
Uncharted lands and faithful hands beckon from afar
In time his eyes will open, and he will begin to see
The beauty of his innocence, free from memory.

His horse that was a nightmare, will be a promise seen
No longer there a prisoner, he’ll realize his dream
And souls will join and be reborn in the eden of his
Heart
He’ll bring forth a light of unity, from which he will
Not part.

Loving eyes will no longer pour acid on his soul
For forged within integrity his horse becomes a foal
And There begins his reckoning a freedom from the past
The pain in vain will dissipate and peace will come to
Pass.

This song has great meaning for me as I discovered it whilst having therapy after the loss of my husband. I’d been going for weeks and was close to giving up, sure that it wasn’t working; I just couldn’t open up to the therapist and I was angry that she kept pushing me to share my feelings. She, being a very good therapist, realised that I was struggling and we began talking in the abstract. I shared with her my love of horses and the peace that I always felt in their presence and she asked me to imagine walking through a forest, to a beautiful river bank with a horse as my guide. During the next couple of visits, we explored the idea further. I was comfortable on my river bank with my horse companion and began to talk about my feeling for the first time.

I honestly don’t know how I found this song but I’m glad I did as it expressed much that I was unable to say:

“He fell into the precipice, by choice he entered through
Dark waters yet unspoken of, a loss he could not bear to
Be true.”

By talking through the song lyrics with my therapist I was able to explore my grief and gradually talk to her about the life I’d had with my husband and what his loss meant to me:

“His heart was over shadowed, it yielded to the pain”

Over time, still using this song for reference, I realised that I did want to live. I wanted a life, even if it was one without love. Most of all I wanted peace, a moments freedom from the grief that was tearing me apart. I suppose that this was the first flicker of hope:

“Loving eyes will no longer pour acid on his soul
For forged within integrity his horse becomes a foal
And There begins his reckoning a freedom from the past
The pain in vain will dissipate and peace will come to
Pass.

Maybe, one day, my horse could become a foal. I clung on to that hope and started my life anew……

As always the prompt has been given to us by the lovely Helen and this week it’s take/taking. If you’d like to play along, and I hope that you will, here are some rules for you:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

Love of my life, you’ve hurt me,
You’ve broken my heart and now you leave me.
Love of my life can’t you see,
Bring it back, bring it back,
Don’t take it away from me because you don’t know what it means to me.

Love of my life, don’t leave me,
You’ve taken my love, you now desert me,

Love of my life, can’t you see?
Bring it back, bring it back,
Don’t take it away from me because you don’t know what it means to me.

You will remember
When this is blown over
And everything’s all by the way
When I grow older
I will be there at your side to remind you how I still love you, I still love you.

Back, hurry back,
Please, bring it back home to me because you don’t know what it means to me.

Love of my life
Love of my life…

Written by: Freddie Mercury
I wasn’t sure whether to use this song this morning, it came to me instantly when I saw the prompt but the story behind it is intensely personal.
When my husband and I first got together we would argue quite frequently; the attraction between us was immediate, love at first sight if you will, but it took a while for us to trust each other. We’d both been hurt in the past and between us we had an awful lot of emotional baggage to sort through. On this one particular day, we’d had a huge fight (I can’t even remember what it was about now) and I was driving home feeling angry, trying very hard not to cry when the phone rang…
I answered it but there was no-one there. I was about to put it down when I heard the first bars of the song that I’ve chosen today. I pulled over and I listened. I could go into raptures over Freddie’s voice and the sublime melody but, for me, this will always be the song that made me realise that I was truly loved and that I loved unconditionally. The argument was completely forgotten after that and we were married sometime later…..
The first time I heard Love of My Life it reduced me to tears but they were joyful, these days it still has the same effect but they’re tears of pain. The memories that the song evokes are happy ones but there’s a line that fill me with terrible bitterness every time I hear it:
“When I grow older, I will be there at your side to remind you how I still love you”
We didn’t get to grow old together because cancer took my husband when I was 48. He’s no longer at my side to remind me how he still loves me and I no longer feel loved because the love of my life was taken from me.

2 am, where do I begin
Crying off my face again
The silent sound of loneliness
Wants to follow me to bed
I’m a ghost of a girl
That I want to be most
I’m the shell of a girl
That I used to know well
Dancing slowly in an empty room
Can the lonely take the place of you
I sing myself a quiet lullaby
Let you go and let the lonely in
To take my heart again
Too afraid, to go inside
For the pain of one more loveless night
For the loneliness will stay with me
And hold me till I fall asleep
I’m a ghost of a girl
That I want to be most
I’m the shell of a girl
That I used to know well
Dancing slowly in an empty room
Can the lonely take the place of you
I sing myself a quiet lullaby
Let you go and let the lonely in
To take my heart again
Broken pieces of
A barely breathing story
Where there once was love
Now there’s only me
And the lonely
Dancing slowly in an empty room
Can the lonely take the place of you
I sing myself a quiet lullaby
Let you go and let the lonely in
To take my heart again

The word lost doesn’t appear anywhere in these lyrics but I chose the song because that was how I felt when I first heard it. It was shortly after I moved to France, I didn’t really know anyone and I was still weighed down by the grief of losing my husband. One night I was sitting on the terrace with a glass of wine and just looking out to sea when this track started playing; the opening bars were enough to make the tears start to fall, not that it took very much in those days…….
It’s very difficult to express how you feel when someone you love dies but the line:
“I’m the shell of a girl
That I used to know well”
summed it up. I was not the person that I had been; I no longer knew myself or was even sure that I wanted to.
The beautiful, beautiful melody overwhelmed me and tears flowed freely, coming without effort but then I heard the line that ripped a sob from my throat and literally brought me crashing to the floor:
“Where there once was love
Now there’s only me
And the lonely”
I played this song over and over and over. I cried so hard that my eyes burned and I could barely breathe as I tried to rid myself of the pain that had lodged in my chest. Even this morning, as I listened to it again, I could feel the tears but I no longer feel so broken that I can’t stop them falling. It has taken more than 4 years for me to finally start to find myself again and, perhaps more importantly, to start to like myself again. I still miss my husband and the love we shared, desperately, but I am no longer lost……..
