Despite this being an unquestionably cheerful prompt I offer you a song which is anything but just because I love it:
Wake
From your sleep
The drying of
Your tears
Today
We escape
We escape
Pack
And get dressed
Before your father hears us
Before
All hell
Breaks loose
Breathe
Keep breathing
Don’t loose
Your nerve
Breathe
Keep breathing
I can’t do this
Alone
Sing
Us a song
A song to keep
Us warm
There’s
Such a chill
Such a chill
You can laugh
A spineless laugh
We hope your
Rules and wisdom choke you
Now
We are one
In everlasting peace
We hope that you choke
That you choke
We hope that you choke
That you choke
We hope
That you choke
That you choke
Songwriters: Colin Charles Greenwood / Edward John O’brien / Jonathan Richard Guy Greenwood / Philip James Selway / Thomas Edward Yorke
This song opens almost in a whisper with just a lone guitar strumming in the background. One child to another begging for silent tears only as they make their midnight escape from a tyrannical father; you can hear, almost feel the fear and desperation. The music then begins to rise as he begs her (I’ve always imagined a boy and girl) to keep breathing, to stay strong. He then tries to divert her from her fears, pleading with her to sing a song and we hear the sound of children playing in the background.
As they become cold, lost and tired, the boy’s anger begins to mount and he taunts the Father who had so terrorised the girl at his side with the childish but heartfelt words:
“We hope your rules and wisdom choke you”
From this moment the music builds and builds to a crescendo which tells the end of the story – the two children who’d made their bid for freedom die together, the boy still with the curse ‘we hope that you choke’ on his lips. I’d always imagined that they were lost in a blizzard and found the next morning, wrapped in each others arms, in a snow drift just a mile from the house where the girl had been so tormented.
This really is a beautiful song but I am afraid it won’t give you a laugh……
Radiohead is in my Top 10 favorite bands and most likely in the Top 5. It’s interesting how many of the “laugh” songs today are not happy (including mine.) Laughing and crying go hand in hand….
I was such a big fan of Radiohead! Loved your post 🙂
