Song Lyric Sunday: Give/Giving

Morning :O) Did we all remember to put the clocks forward last night? Well done if you did; I forgot and what was a lie in until 7am became a ‘damn’ and ‘what the hell, I’m awake now’. So, here I am, at my keyboard at 7.30 am but ready to tackle another Song Lyric Sunday. The prompt this week, given to us as always by the lovely Helen, is give or giving; if you love music and want to meet some cool new blogging friends why not play along:

Here are the “rules”:

  • Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
  • Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
  • Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
  • Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
  • Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
  • Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process

I’m so tired, of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I’ve been a temptress too long
Just
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be, a woman
I just want to be a woman
From this time, unchained
We’re all looking at a different picture
Through this new frame of mind
A thousand flowers could bloom
Move over, and give us some room
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be, a woman
I just want to be a woman
So don’t you stop, being a man
Just take a little look from our side when you can
Sow a little tenderness
No matter if you cry
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be, a woman
It’s all I want to be is all woman
For this is the beginning of forever and ever
It’s time to move over
I’m so tired, of playing
Playing with this bow and arrow
Gonna give my heart away
Leave it to the other girls to play
For I’ve been a temptress too long
Just
Give me a reason to love you
Give me a reason to be

I first came across Portishead when I was in my Gothic (teenage angst) period; my wardrobe was divested of anything remotely resembling colour and I discovered the delights of black eyeliner and purple lipstick (shudders!). This particular song seemed beyond sophisticated to my young mind, it’s sexy and sultry and I loved it on first hearing. Actually, listening to it again this morning, it still sounds pretty sophisticated which means, either, I haven’t grown up or it’s a damn fine song – I’m happy with either quite frankly :O)
Anyway I hope you like it and have a wonderful Sunday :O)

Lips are turning blue
A kiss that can’t renew
I only dream of you
My beautiful
Tiptoe to your room
A starlight in the gloom
I only dream of you
And you never knew
Sing for absolution
I will be singing
Falling from your grace
There’s nowhere left to hide
In no one to confide
The truth runs deep inside
And will never die
Lips are turning blue
A kiss that can’t renew
I only dream of you
My beautiful
Sing for absolution
I will be singing
Falling from your grace
Sing for absolution
I will be singing
Falling from your grace
Our wrongs remain unrectified
And our souls won’t be exhumed

It was my brother who first introduced me to Muse and I immediately became a huge fan. I’m fairly sure that we should have been somewhere but instead we spent about 30 minutes sitting in his car listening to track after track as I became increasingly enamored. Their music was nothing like I had ever heard before; it was rock but it also had a classical feel and I found it enormously powerful.
Anyway, that’s my choice for this week and I really hope that you enjoy it :O)
I really look forward to hearing your choices so please share them with me.

This is my choice and it was such an easy one to make; as soon as I heard the prompt this song popped int my head instantly:

“I Go To Sleep”

When I look up from my pillow
I dream you are there with me
Though you are far away
I know you’ll always be near to me

I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me

I look around me
And feel you are ever so close to me
Each tear that flows from my eye
Brings back memories of you to me

I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me

I was wrong, I will cry
I will love you till the day I die
You were all, you alone and no one else
You were meant for me

When morning comes again
I have the loneliness you left me
Each day drags by
Until finally my time descends on me

I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me

Written by Ray Davies
Although this was an easy choice to make, it’s a difficult song for me to write about because it sums up, precisely and perfectly how I felt during the months following my husband’s death. To sleep beside someone, every night, for more than 10 years, finding comfort just in their warm presence and then to have it taken away from you is almost unbearable. I dreaded the days because, without my love, they were empty and lacking everything that had ever mattered but the nights……..a time meant for rest and recovery became a form of torment.
My husband and I didn’t fall asleep in each others arms but holding hands, more specifically I would wrap his thumb in my fist and he would close his fingers around mine. We may not wake up like that but that’s how we drifted off, every night. After I lost him, the only way I could sleep was to wrap my fingers around my own thumb and imagine that it was his and that he was still there beside me.
A bed is not a very big space but it can feel enormous when you reach out in the middle of the night searching for a hand that is no longer there. There are blissful seconds when you believe you will find what you are seeking but then all you feel, as you reach further and further is cold, empty sheets. Worse still is the realisation, which comes each and every night, that what you are so desperate to feel, you will never feel again.
The melody, the lyrics and Chrissie Hynde’s powerful performance combine to create a heartbreakingly beautiful song; I really hope that you enjoy it……
