Wine and the Art of Conquering Fear

Morning chaps :O) I have a question for you. Have you ever been in a situation where you had no idea what the outcome would be but you put the brakes on because the thing that stood between you and your final destination scared the bejeezus out of you? What was at the end of the road could have been amazing or terrible but you never got to find out because you just couldn’t get past your fear?

Morning chaps :O) I have a question for you. Have you ever been in a situation where you had no idea what the outcome would be but you put the brakes on because the thing that stood between you and your final destination scared the bejeezus out of you? What was at the end of the road could have been amazing or terrible but you never got to find out because you just couldn’t get past your fear?

If the answer is yes then can I just take a few minutes of your time to tell you what happened to me last night? My best friend and I had popped over to Nice for a great dinner of savoury crepes with guacamole (yum!) and, as is the norm in summer we’d taken his motorbike (I love speed and am always a willing passenger despite the havoc that a crash helmet plays with your hair when it’s 26 degrees C) . As is my wont I had a couple of glasses of red wine with dinner.

I was expecting to go straight home but we headed off into the mountains and stopped at the edge of a narrow path. Now, I should tell you at this point that common sense is very much the order of the day around here so most of the smaller mountain roads don’t have barriers; the idea is that, if you are sensible, you’ll look where you’re going and won’t fall off!

This is a bit of an issue for me because I do like to have something between me and the edge of a cliff, I’m funny like that! So, there we were, umpty ump hundreds of feet up a mountain, on a little path with no barriers, in the dark with just the light of a phone to guide our steps.

At this point I was on the point of bottling out as I really, really don’t like heights and I knew that a few people would be pretty pissed off if I plunged to my death. However, I had been previously fortified by just enough alcohol to overcome my fears but not so much that I couldn’t safely put one foot in front of the other.

IMG_5705I carried on, stumbling occasionally and wondering what on earth we were doing up here in the middle of the night but then we reached a small platform at the end of the long, windy and slightly treacherous path. Oh My GOD!!!! The View!!! I just cannot tell you how unbelievably beautiful it was (the photos do not do it justice). I literally just gazed with my mouth open and my eyes like saucers.

To top it off, as we stood there, a huge firework display started in the middle of Monaco (some sporting event or another was going on) and we had a birds eye view! It lasted for about 15 minutes and was absolutely spectacular. What an amazing experience!

The moral of this story is that, if I hadn’t overcome my fear of heights, I would have missed all of it. I didn’t know what was at the end of the path and it would have been so easy to just give in to my terror and turn back; I would never have known what I was missing but, oh boy, what I would have missed!

I can’t say that, from now on, I’ll be grabbing each adventure that comes my way without fear or worry but I do know that I won’t be letting fear stop me from having those adventures. Maybe I’ll even get to the point where I’ll be having them without the aid of a glass of vino, who knows ;O)

Please let me know if you’ve ever missed out because of your fears or even just if you like wine (at least we know we’ll have something in common), I’d really love to hear from you

You Are Unique…..

How much would you pay for something that was a complete one off? If you knew, without a shadow of a doubt that, in over 7 billion examples, there was only ONE like this. Something that precious is priceless isn’t it? Well, that’s you. You are unique; why do you think you are worthless?

Do You Realise How Awesome You Are?

Do you sometimes struggle with your blog? Do you put your heart and soul into a piece, convinced that it will be the one to gain you real recognition, and you get 3 likes and zero comments? Do you look at what other people are doing and feel that your work just pales in comparison? If so this quote is for you because you are doing what millions of people don’t have the confidence, drive or determination to do: you are writing from your heart and sharing a part of you with the whole world.

If so this quote is for you because you are doing what millions of people don’t have the confidence, drive or determination to do: you are writing from your heart and sharing a part of you with the whole world.

  • It takes courage to put yourself out there and risk criticism or ridicule
  • It takes determination to continue writing even if you have setbacks
  • It takes dedication to make the time in a busy schedule to write
  • It takes creativity to come up with something new every time you write
  • It takes patience to learn and develop your writing
  • It takes strength to show your vulnerability when you share personal experiences
  • It takes kindness to take the time to read, like and comment on other people’s writing

It takes all of these qualities and more to be a blogger and that’s you! Do you realise how awesome you are?

Keep that in mind as you go about your day and just allow yourself a smile and a little feeling of pride because you deserve it :O)

The Meaning Of Life (Part 2)

Try to imagine a situation where it was suddenly made very clear to you that you had no great purpose in life and that your very existence resulted from nothing more than intense boredom? How would you feel if the person who broke that news to you then just buggered off to have a nice cup of tea?

Try to imagine a situation where it was suddenly made very clear to you that you had no great purpose in life and that your very existence resulted from nothing more than intense boredom? How would you feel if the person who broke that news to you then just buggered off to have a nice cup of tea? Well, this is where we left off last time………….

“What do you reckon boss?”

“Weeelllllll, there is a chance I may have been a tad hasty”

“I did say at the time……..”

“Do NOT say I told you so and stop looking so smug!”

“OK OK, sorry, but listen, what exactly are they doing down there?”

shocked“Nothing. That’s the problem”

“Some of them must be doing something surely”

“Nope, nothing, they’ve even stopped all that infernal electronic yabbering; there’s been no mention of that Dump person or Flexit, (I still haven’t figured out what that’s all about), for absolutely ages….”

“Bloody hell that is serious!!”

“I know and I’m not sure what to do about it, any thoughts”

“We could have another cup of tea……..maybe a couple of hobnobs?”

“I’m serious. I’ve never seen them so quiet, I’m a bit worried to be honest with you”

“That’s what you wanted isn’t it? For them all to shut up bickering and stop wrecking the factory?”

“Well yes I suppose……….oh hang on a minute……..something’s happening…..move over so I can see”

party“Bugger me, that’s a turn up for the books”

“What? Tell me, what’s going on?”

“They seem to be having……a party! They’re celebrating”

“What all of them????? Blimey I would not like the catering bill for that one! Quite pretty though isn’t it? Hang on a minute why are you grinning like that?”

“It worked! That’s why I’m grinning, I was right”

“That’s not what you said 2 centuries ago boss, you said you’d cocked it right up”

“I said, if you remember correctly, that I may have been a ‘tad hasty'”

“….mutter…….mutter…smart arse…….whatever………”

“I heard that!”

“Ahem sorry boss, anyway what’s going on now?”

“Well it looks like the essence of sheep has finally worked its way out of their systems and…..huh! would you look at that……..they’re fixing the factory. Do you remember all those million of trees you whinged about making and then you threw a hissy fit when they wrecked them”

“Yes. I remember”

“Oh stop pulling that face, they’ve put them all back! Every last one”

“They’ve what? I don’t believe it. What about all the ‘stuff’ that they thought they needed and all the bombs they insisted would bring peace?……..dickheads!”

“Come on now don’t be like that, they’ve stopped all that and they’re being nice to each other”

“Nice? You mean it’s finally going the way we planned it?”

peace“Yep! The specials didn’t work, the plagues and disasters didn’t work, they just needed time to realise that they’re no more important than cows, just a bit more complicated from a wiring perspective”

“Well I’ve got to say boss I’m a bit relieved, I really thought we were going to have to resurrect the dinosaur prototypes for a while there. I solved the whole extinction problem by the way”

“How?”

“Thermal underwear, works a treat”

“Oh well done! Looks like we won’t be needing them now though”

“Figures!”

“That electronic chattering seems to have stopped for good as well”

“Bloody good job, gave me a headache all that constant whinging”

“Ah no, hang on a sec, there is one still going………all on his own apparently….weird”

“Who is it”

“It’s that Dump bloke”

“Worried?”

“Are you kidding? Come one let’s have a cup of tea….got any of those hobnobs left”

So there you have it. What do you think? Would you be happier if you knew that the only purpose you had in life was to repair the ‘factory’ and be nice to other people? Let me know, I’d love to hear from you

By The Time…..

This is the only moment in your life when you saw what you saw, heard what you heard,  felt what you felt and looked how you looked; in the next moment at least one of those things will have changed.

……..that you’ve finished reading this, the moment will have passed and it will never come again. This is the only moment in your life when you saw what you saw, heard what you heard,  felt what you felt and looked how you looked; in the next moment at least one of those things will have changed.

This is life and, whatever is happening in this moment will pass and never come again….

If times are bad, don’t despair, they will pass; if times are good embrace them with your very being because they will not come like this again….

Live. Life.

There’s Plenty of Time…..

“Did you never think about having a family? Isn’t it tough being on your own”

No! The time was just never quite right and I don’t want to rush into anything

“You’ve worked so hard these last few years, why not go for that promotion?”

No! A promotion means more responsibility and I’m not prepared for that

“Look at this little bike, why don’t you just get on and try, you’ll have fun”.

No! I’m too young; I might fall off and anyway there’s plenty of time for that..

“Come in, the water’s lovely and swimming’s easy when you know how”

No! I might drown! Swimming can wait, there’s always tomorrow

“Why don’t you go and talk to Steve, he’s a great bloke and I know you’ll get on”

No! I’m not ready for a relationship and, anyway, who knows what’s round the corner

“Did you never think about having a family? Isn’t it tough being on your own”

No! The time was just never quite right and I don’t want to rush into anything

“You’ve worked so hard these last few years, why not go for that promotion?”

No! A promotion means more responsibility and I’m not prepared for that

“You have plenty of time now you’ve stopped work, why don’t you travel?”

No! I’m a woman on her own, who knows what can happen! Maybe next year

“You’re stuck at home now why don’t you try a hobby? Painting perhaps

No! I’m too old. Why would I want to try something new at my age it’s a waste of time

“THIS IS THE END OF YOUR LIFE, ARE YOU READY”?

Oh shit…………………………………………………….

Be honest. Is it just me?

I can’t help but wonder if the people that put out these ‘quick and easy’ weight loss plans actually think about the people they are supposedly trying to help; if something is so ‘quick and easy’ how does it make the people feel who don’t shrink down to a size 10 in a couple of months? Like failures I would imagine – how is that helping?

Warning: this post contains profanities because the article that prompted it pissed me off (opps, sorry!)

Is it just me or does it seem as though there’s new ‘weight loss’ advice published every single bloody day? If you’re struggling to lose weight do you find that you’re running around like a headless chicken trying to keep track of what everyone is telling you? Does it make you feel as though, whatever you try, you never get it quite right? I can’t help but wonder if the people that put out these ‘quick and easy’ weight loss plans actually think about the people they are supposedly trying to help; if something is so ‘quick and easy’ how does it make the people feel who don’t shrink down to a size 10 in a couple of months? Like failures I would imagine – how is that helping?Diet frustration

The latest ‘gem’ to be published follows on from yet another study on the best way to tackle obesity. We’ve had – low fat, low carbs, Mediterranean diets, keto diets, the Atkins diet, the raw food diet etc etc bloody etc – the list just goes on and endlessly on…but now, we’ve come full circle and gone back to the ‘crash’ diet which was all the rage when I was young!

So what is a crash diet?

Tiny foodBasically you eat bugger all. Oh sorry, were you waiting for a more detailed explanation or something sciency? Can’t help there I’m afraid, the ‘plan’ really is that simple – you cut your calorie intake down to 800 a day and…..well that’s it. If you want an idea of what you could eat on 800 calories a day have a look: https://www.eatthismuch.com/diet-plan/800-calorie/ – trust me, it’s not a lot!

Mind you, you won’t have to worry too much about meal planning as they are all ‘replaced’ with shakes, soups and nutrition bars which are all designed to make you feel full. Apparently a former Government ‘obesity Tsar’ (God give me strength!) said:

‘By referring people to this programme, they lose 7kg more than they would have lost under what we usually offer them. [The advice to cut calories and eat more healthily] It’s phenomenal – extraordinary – and like nothing we’ve seen in primary care before.’

Its-not-rocket-9lkofsNo it isn’t!!!! It’s not fucking extraordinary at all – it’s simple bloody logic!!! And you have seen it before – meal replacement diets have been around for donkeys years! I do apologise for that small outburst but this kind of mindless nonsense really gets on my pip!

If you eat 4000 calories a day and you change your habits so you eat 3000 a day, you will lose weight

If you usually eat 4000 calories a day and you then eat 2000 you will lose more weight

If the norm for you is 4000 calories a day and you just eat meal supplements which give you 800 calories a day you will lose shit loads of weight – absolutely no question at all…..

The problem is (and this is always the problem), if you lose all this weight and then go back to the 4000 calories a day, you will put the weight back on again. According to this particular report, apparently that doesn’t really matter as you will have seen health benefits in the ‘short-term’. So you had type 2 diabetes….you lost the weight and then you didn’t…..you put the weight back on and the type 2 diabetes comes back…..and you’re back where you started!

This plan, which costs around £700, has been proposed to the NHS to help with the obesity crisis. I have a much simpler and considerably cheaper solution – just print this, in great big red letters, on a piece of A4 paper, hand it to people who want to lose weight and then leave it up to them:

HAVE A LONG HARD THINK ABOUT WHY OVER EAT AND ADDRESS THAT PROBLEM THEN MEMORISE THIS:

CALORIES PUT ON WEIGHT. THE MORE CALORIES YOU INGEST THE MORE WEIGHT YOU WILL GAIN.

EAT LESS CALORIES AND BURN SOME OFF THROUGH EXERCISE AND YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT

EAT NATURAL HEALTHY FOOD AND NOT JUNK FOOD AND PROCESSED CRAP AND YOU WILL LOSE WEIGHT

WHEN YOU ARE AT YOUR DESIRED WEIGHT – DO NOT REVERT TO OLD HABITS AND YOU WILL NOT GAIN WEIGHT

What do you reckon? Think it will catch on?

I’m really sorry if any of this sounds harsh but I am really sick and tired of all these ‘diets’ that promise miracle results to, sometimes, desperate people. There is no quick and easy solution, losing weight is a case of balancing what you eat and what you do; the only effective way to shed those pounds and keep them off is to change your eating and exercise patterns – not for a few weeks or months but for the rest of your life………….

Song Lyric Sunday

I picked up on this over here at Lydia’s site and I really liked the concept so I thought I’d join in and wondered if you might like to as well. The idea is to come up with song lyrics which, for you, best match the theme – in this case ‘Let Go’. My choice, which may, at first glance, appear not to make one iota of sense is Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes….

If you don’t know the song, it has an insistent, underlying beat which, for me at least, lends the music a strange power; it’s very raw in its simplicity but, in contrast, the lyrics are deep and complex. Seven Nation Army has a special significance for me as, during an Antony Robbins conference that I was attending, someone spontaneously started humming the tune; after just a few seconds everyone in the auditorium had picked up on it – that was 12,000 people humming in unison! The whole point of being there that weekend was to ‘let go’ of the past and learn how to build a better future so perhaps that’s why the connection is there for me.

The lyrics describe a mental struggle and the conflicted emotions that arise from it; the over-riding message that I got from the song was that it’s author was desperate to find his place in the World. In the end he becomes overwhelmed by the desire to go home, forget the fame and work on the land until the ‘sweat drips out of every pore’ – he let’s go…………

I’m gonna fight ’em all
A seven nation army couldn’t hold me back
They’re gonna rip it off
Taking their time right behind my back
And I’m talking to myself at night
Because I can’t forget
Back and forth through my mind
Behind a cigarette
And the message coming from my eyes
Says leave it alone
Don’t want to hear about it
Every single one’s got a story to tell
Everyone knows about it
From the Queen of England to the hounds of hell
And if I catch it coming back my way
I’m gonna serve it to you
And that ain’t what you want to hear
But that’s what I’ll do
And the feeling coming from my bones
Says find a home
I’m going to Wichita
Far from this opera for evermore
I’m gonna work the straw
Make the sweat drip out of every pore
And I’m bleeding, and I’m bleeding, and I’m bleeding
Right before the lord
All the words are gonna bleed from me
And I will sing no more
And the stains coming from my blood
Tell me go back home

How Much Are You Worth?

So my question to you is – what do you think you are worth? If your blog posts were tangible things where would you sell them – the local market, a department store or would you create and build your own Blog Store? Perhaps I’m really asking what price do you put on yourself…………

Imagine that your blog was a tangible thing; you could pack up a couple of hundred of your best posts and pop down to the local market to sell them.  Imagine standing at your stall and yelling “get yer luverly fresh blogs ‘ere” at the top of your voice. Fixing your cheekiest grin on your face and offering a couple of sentences to tempt people as they go by – “here you go darlin’ see how this grabs ya!”. Dell boy

Maybe the local market wouldn’t suit you at all; perhaps you’d prefer to sell your posts in a nice big, shiny department store. Pretty girls with perfect make up and professional smiles would select a few, fragrant words from your finest posts and waft them gently under the noses of prospective customers as they wander past. There would be a gentle engagement with customers who showed the slightest interest and they would find themselves sitting on a tall stool reading samples of your work, slightly self-conscious but curious none the less..

Lux storePerhaps you’d prefer that your blog had its own store? It would be wonderfully luxurious with a security guard at the door to welcome you in and glorious assistants who would ask their exclusive and well heeled customers to sip an ice cold glass of champagne while just 2 or 3 of your gilded posts are brought to them in a glass case by a man in soft white gloves…..

But here’s the rub; what if, on your first day on the market stall, your blog is so popular that you run out of posts to sell after the first 3 hours? You’ve offered a great product and a dirt cheap price and it has been absolutely lapped up. Yes, you’ve been successful but those couple of hundred posts took you months to write so what are you going to do now? You’ve booked and paid for another stall for the same day next week but unless you work 24/7 you’re going to have nothing to sell and if you do, well, its not going to be your best work is it….?

You won’t have that problem in the department store of course because the price tags on your posts will be higher and therefore people will need to consider a little before they buy. Your returns per post will be higher but they make take time to shift from the shelves because so many other, newer blogs arrive every day and with that you risk your posts becoming a little stale and ending up in the 50% off bin or with a 3 for the price of 2 sticker…….

So, what about the Blog Store? You have created posts that are so desired for their beauty and rarity that you can put on whatever price tag you like and people will pay, in fact you probably wont use anything so distracting as price tags as they could spoil the lines of your posts. Instead you’ll work on the ‘if you have to ask, you can’t afford it principal’. People may not understand your writing or even appreciate it but they will buy it because, if you’ve bought a post from Blog Store, you are someone; your friends will be envious and strangers will compliment you on your impeccable taste…..However, each individual post takes months to create and are so delicate that even a misplaced comma can ruin them meaning that they have to be pulled apart and started again; each piece has to be completely original but, at the same time your brand identity has to be retained….

Self worthSo my question to you is – what do you think you are worth? If your blog posts were tangible things where would you sell them – the local market, a department store or would you create and build your own Blog Store? Perhaps I’m really asking what price do you put on yourself…………

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts – have an amazing day guys!
