Song Lyric Sunday

Good morning and a happy Sunday to you all :O) It’s time to share our favourite tracks once again and to discover new music by connecting with other bloggers. Jim Adams brings us the prompt this week which is Ocean/Sea/Lake/Bay and, I have to say, I found it incredibly difficult. However, I eventually remembered this wonderful song by Pink Floyd and, fortunately, the lyrics only deviate from the prompt a tiny bit ;O)

Beyond the horizon of the place we lived when we were young
In a world of magnets and miracles
Our thoughts strayed constantly and without boundary
The ringing of the division bell had begun
Along the Long Road and on down the Causeway
Do they still meet there by the Cut
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
When friends surrounded
The nights of wonder
Looking beyond the embers of bridges glowing behind us
To a glimpse of how green it was on the other side
Steps taken forwards but sleepwalking back again
Dragged by the force of some inner tide
At a higher altitude with flag unfurled
We reached the dizzy heights of that dreamed of world
Encumbered forever by desire and ambition
There’s a hunger still unsatisfied
Our weary eyes still stray to the horizon
Though down this road we’ve been so many times
The grass was greener
The light was brighter
The taste was sweeter
The nights of wonder
With friends surrounded
The dawn mist glowing
The water flowing
The endless river
Forever and ever

I was at at my brother’s apartment when I first heard this song; we were chatting and music was playing softly in the background. The first few bars prompted me to interrupt the discussion and ask him what it was.
The song starts with the tolling of a bell and a melody which I found profoundly sad (although to be fair, in those days, I found sadness in many things). The lyrics speak of the loss of childhood and also of regret:
There was a ragged band that followed in our footsteps
Running before times took our dreams away
Leaving the myriad small creatures trying to tie us to the ground
To a life consumed by slow decay
At the time, this was about 3 years ago, I could only focus on the regret in the words and the fact that death (time) had taken all my dreams away and that my husband’s life had been consumed by slow decay (cancer) and it resonated with me for that reason.
However, what I now find to be most profound is the message in the song, namely that looking at the horizon and always wanting what we dream may be there will take away any pleasure that we have in this moment. This achingly beautiful song is a poetic expansion of “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence”.

  1. “Aching beautiful” is the best description ever for this song. The grass is not always greener … there are brown patches everywhere. The message of being here now … to be present is soothing.
