Torquemada blazed the trail, thousands perished
In the great name of Faith he struck them down, proud
Thomas Cromwell tortured, maimed, broke heretics
In God’s name and the King’s: treason or some such
Bloody Mary turned the tables once again
Three hundred burned alive for not believing
Another Cromwell, O, set brother against
Brother in the name of the Father. Revolt.
Hitler, 6 million more would meet their end
For their beliefs. Omar al-Bashir brought fear
To Darfur. More millions dead, still dying
So Many more names belong here. Remembered
For torment, evil, killing of believers
Of non-believers. Of black and white. Of rich
And poor alike. Death in the name of something
Under a righteous banner, held aloft
We remember. Still. Why do we never learn?
Many people are saying that these are terrible times, with unprecedented violence and persecution and yet history will show us that it has ever been thus. Since time immemorial human beings have been fighting against each other in the name of religion or for their land or their beliefs and what do we have to show for it? Nothing has changed, we’re still fighting, we’ve just found more sophisticated and efficient ways of doing it. Even after thousands and thousands of years we still haven’t learned to accept each other for who we are………….sad really……….

Yes, it was bad back then (forever back then) and its is bad now. A stoic shrug threatens to rise only to be replaced with a ‘what if’, although ‘what if’ is only to be found in the land of nod.

It is very sad. And we don’t learn a lesson from our history.

Lisa, I love this post. Not what has happened through time, but for its clarity and honesty. I was, steangely, just saying the same things to my husband yesterday. Nothing has changed at all, within human hearts. Just different ways of doing things. I wonder why humanity never learns? What set you off thinking about this just now Lisa? I am wondering, are you a history buff? You know a lot about it. I am a bit of a hidtory buff, yet at school I HATED it. Now, I love to research it whenever I ca. Especially the Reformation period. I just cannot understand how people can believe so stubbornly that THEY are right, and to the extent that they will horrifically kill other for being “Wrong” or different. It is a psychological thing, and people HAVE to have scapegoats. Makes THEM feel better, but God only knows why. I have been horrified of late by what happened in Pittsburgh with the atrack on the Jewish synagogue. This is a great post Lisa. Thankyou for it x

I do love certain periods in history (Tudor/Elizabethan especially) but what got me thinking about it was that I made the mistake of looking at the news, which I don’t very often, and it was just full of stories about what’s wrong with our World. I’m with you, I cannot understand persecution and the violence that comes with it – what happened in Pittsburgh is a great example. The older I get the less I understand the human desire for destruction; we seem determined to destroy our planet and each other……xx

You are so right Lisa. We actually have a very beautiful world. Yet both the planet itself and the people in it are treated with such disrespect. It is as if people have a destruct and self destruct button within the. Yes, I love that period of history too.

Exactly Lorraine – we seem to have always been on a path towards self-destruction :O(
Fascinating isn’t it? I’ll watch or read anything about Henry VIII and Elizabeth I ;O) xx

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair.”

A powerful poem. Unfortunately, many people act and say it is because of their “faith” when truly it is due to their own selfish and evil desires

Thank you 😊 yes I think you’re right, religion seems be used as an excuse for much wrongdoing

And all around me now I see it. And I hear, ‘no, that could never happen again. we’re better now.’ I fear such blatant denial. Such thoughts. ‘I wish I didn’t know now what I didn’t know then.’
