Here we are again, greeting another Sunday; what are you up to today? Something fun? Me? Well, I’m putting together my submission for Song Lyric Sunday, a fantastic way to find new music and new blogger friends. If you haven’t played along before, why not have a go this week? The lovely Helen over at This Thing Called Life One Word at a Time has given us the prompt Sleep………..
Here are the rules for you:
Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process
This is my choice and it was such an easy one to make; as soon as I heard the prompt this song popped int my head instantly:
“I Go To Sleep”
When I look up from my pillow
I dream you are there with me
Though you are far away
I know you’ll always be near to me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I look around me
And feel you are ever so close to me
Each tear that flows from my eye
Brings back memories of you to me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I was wrong, I will cry
I will love you till the day I die
You were all, you alone and no one else
You were meant for me
When morning comes again
I have the loneliness you left me
Each day drags by
Until finally my time descends on me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
I go to sleep, sleep
And imagine that you’re there with me
Written by Ray Davies
Although this was an easy choice to make, it’s a difficult song for me to write about because it sums up, precisely and perfectly how I felt during the months following my husband’s death. To sleep beside someone, every night, for more than 10 years, finding comfort just in their warm presence and then to have it taken away from you is almost unbearable. I dreaded the days because, without my love, they were empty and lacking everything that had ever mattered but the nights……..a time meant for rest and recovery became a form of torment.
My husband and I didn’t fall asleep in each others arms but holding hands, more specifically I would wrap his thumb in my fist and he would close his fingers around mine. We may not wake up like that but that’s how we drifted off, every night. After I lost him, the only way I could sleep was to wrap my fingers around my own thumb and imagine that it was his and that he was still there beside me.
A bed is not a very big space but it can feel enormous when you reach out in the middle of the night searching for a hand that is no longer there. There are blissful seconds when you believe you will find what you are seeking but then all you feel, as you reach further and further is cold, empty sheets. Worse still is the realisation, which comes each and every night, that what you are so desperate to feel, you will never feel again.
The melody, the lyrics and Chrissie Hynde’s powerful performance combine to create a heartbreakingly beautiful song; I really hope that you enjoy it……
That is a lovely remembrance Lisa and a great choice. Strange – this morning I exited a shop at the same time as a mother and daughter. Mum was carrying a bag in each hand, daughter was about 6. Mum extended her little finger and said “You hold on to my little finger while we cross the road.” I thought how lovely it was and how such a small contact can be so reassuring and safe!
I agree that listening to song lyrics one of the best ways of dealing with melancholy moods. I guess that’s a part of what Sunday means for some of us..
Well, since you asked, I spent all day Sunday at the watering hole watching football. We call it “all day Church” and we do it a couple of times a season (when I can’t get my Rams game at home). It’s great fun, but it usually takes me a couple of days to get back to “good” after. 😉
The song choice was excellent, and the words about your husband were incredibly moving. I can’t imagine that feeling. Much love, sister, and hope your week is going well. 🙂
Yes … I certainly enjoy the Pretenders, and Chrissie Hynde.

Oh my ❤ ❤ lots of hugs. Sleeping alone is no fun when you'd miss so much the touch of his hand.
