Hey it’s Sunday! A very good morning to everyone, I hope you’ve all had a great week :O) Well, here we are again, it’s time for Song Lyric Sunday (yay!), brought to us by the lovely Helen over at A thing called life one word at a time. If you’re a lover of music please join in, I promise that you will really enjoy it. There’s a different one word prompt every week and today it’s speak. If you fancy giving it a go, these are the rules:
- Post the lyrics to the song of your choice, whether it fits the theme or not
- Please try to include the songwriter(s) – it’s a good idea to give credit where credit is due and it’s honestly just a simple Google search
- Make sure you also credit the singer/band and provide a link to where you found the lyrics
- Link to the YouTube video, or pull it into your post so others can listen to the song
- Ping back to this post or my own Song Lyric Sunday post
- Read at least one other person’s blog so we can all share new and fantastic music and create amazing new blogging friends in the process
I’ve taken a slightly off the wall approach to this as the lyrics to the song I’ve chosen are not about speech or speaking but they are words that are spoken from the heart. The singer is sharing something deeply personal with his audience; he is explaining to them, in his own special way that his life will soon be over. He speaks of his fear and sadness but he also tells his legion of fans that he will be a performer to the very end:
“Inside my heart is breaking.
My make-up may be flaking.
But my smile still stays on”
The singer is, of course, the incomparable Freddie Mercury who was loved by so many millions of people for his originality, his incredible voice, his energy and his larger than life performances. The song is The Show Must Go On:
Empty spaces.
What are we living for?
Abandoned places.
I guess we know the score.
On and on.
Does anybody know what we are looking for?
Another hero,
Another mindless crime
Behind the curtain
In the pantomime.
Hold the line.
Does anybody want to take it anymore?
Show must go on.
Show must go on.
Inside my heart is breaking.
My make-up may be flaking.
But my smile still stays on.
Whatever happens,
I’ll leave it all to chance.
Another heartache,
Another failed romance.
On and on.
Does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I’m learning.
I must be warmer now.
I’ll soon be turning
‘Round the corner now.
Outside the dawn is breaking,
But inside in the dark I’m aching to be free.
Show must go on.
Show must go on.
Inside my heart is breaking.
My make-up may be flaking,
But my smile still stays on.
My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies.
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die.
I can fly, my friends.
Show must go on.
Show must go on.
I’ll face it with a grin.
I’m never giving in—
Oh—with the show.
I’ll top the bill,
I’ll overkill.
I have to find the will to carry on with the show.
On with the show.
Show must go on.
Writer(s): Roger Taylor, Freddie Mercury, John Deacon, Brian May
I remember the first time that I heard this song and also the news that Freddie Mercury was dying of AIDs. I was struck by the power and the beauty of both the music and the lyrics but also by the courage that it must have taken to write and perform the song.
It’s one of my absolute favourites and I do so hope that you enjoy it :O)
Have a great Sunday

Yes, one of my favourite songs and so poignant. My friend’s husband was at boarding school in India ( not in the same class ) with Freddy Mercury and apparently he had an aura of being someone special even then.
